Chanu Rhee, MD, MPH | Director | Email

Dr. Chanu Rhee is an internationally recognized expert in the epidemiology, surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, and management of sepsis. His work led to the development of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s sepsis surveillance strategy that is being used to better track sepsis incidence and outcomes, provide new insights into risk factors and treatment strategies, and drive further innovations in care. He has also been a leader in sepsis quality improvement efforts within the Mass General Brigham Healthcare System and has participated in several national committees focusing on improving sepsis care and outcomes, including initiatives sponsored by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Michael Klompas, MD, MPH | Director | Email

Dr. Michael Klompas works on enhancing public health surveillance using electronic health information in two major spheres:  hospital-level surveillance for nosocomial complications and population-level surveillance for infectious diseases and chronic conditions.  Dr. Klompas’ hospital level surveillance work is primarily supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Under the auspices of the CDC Epicenters he has worked on developing objective, automatable definitions for complications of mechanical ventilation.  This work ultimately led to CDC replacing their longstanding definition for ventilator-associated pneumonia with definitions for “ventilator-associated events.”  On the population-side, Dr. Klompas and colleagues have enjoyed a long, rich collaboration with local clinical practice groups and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
