Rates of diabetes have doubled in the US in the last 30 years. Obesity continues to climb in most populations, contributing to the higher rates of diabetes and other cardiovascular conditions. DPM investigators and alumni have led a breadth of epidemiologic, intervention and health services research studies into the causes, sequelae, and prevention of obesity, diabetes, and related chronic disease risk, with a focus on defined populations. This session will focus on how DPM’s research on this topic has changed policy and practice, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for obesity and diabetes prevention and care.

2:45 - 3:45 pm: Panel Session: Lessons for the Future from Twenty-Five Years of Health Insurance Policy Research
DPM has been closely involved in research to understand the impact of evolving health insurance policies and the complex interactions between key stakeholders in the US health system. DPM research about health insurance policy over the last 25 years has focused on drug policy, provider reimbursement arrangements, Medicare, health reform, and new insurance benefit designs such as high-deductible plans. Many important questions remain with the US health care system currently at a crucial crossroads. Panelists in this session will reflect on past, current, and future issues in health insurance policy, including key issues and challenges for the future.

DPM has partnered with healthcare delivery systems and public health to lead wide-ranging programs to create robust platforms for surveillance of healthcare associated infections in communities and in hospitals, develop novel quality measures targeting complications associated with hospitalization, implement large-scale interventions to prevent infections in healthcare settings, and evaluate the impact of payment policies on healthcare-associated infections. Panelists in this session will look ahead to identify future research, policy, and implementation priorities in the field of healthcare-associated infections, and to identify targets that can measure the impact of work on this field.
