We conducted additional follow-up of the trial participants at age 6.5 years. Study researchers evaluated 13,889 children, or 81% of those randomized. Data collection included assessments of atopy, cognitive ability, behavior, growth, anthropometry, and blood pressure.
Intention to treat analyses of PROBIT II data demonstrated that the randomized intervention did not reduce measures of adiposity – including body mass index, waist or hip circumference, or skinfold thicknesses -- increase stature, or reduce blood pressure among children born in the experimental group at age 6.5 years of age (Kramer et al, Am J Clin Nutr, 2007). In a separate analysis, there were no significant differences in measures of obesity between children born in the intervention and congrol groups (Kramer et al, J Nutr, 2009). In analyses of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQs) administered to the mothers and teachers of PROBIT participants, we identified no treatment effects on participants’ total difficulties, emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, or prosocial behavior, though mothers in the experimental group were more likely to exclusively breastfeed children born after the child enrolled in PROBIT (Kramer et al, Pediatrics, 2008).
