The Department of Population Medicine seeks a faculty member to expand its portfolio of research on chronic disease and obesity prevention.  This faculty member will initiate and participate in collaborative research focused on weight-related or metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Areas of active investigation include: surveillance of trends in risk factors or disease; etiologic research into the underlying causes of chronic diseases at individual and population levels, with a particular focus on the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD); interventions to prevent or treat these chronic diseases; health services and policy research; and new methods for the application or evaluation of these approaches.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • MD plus MPH (or comparable advanced degree), or doctorate in appropriate field (epidemiology, nutrition, behavioral or social sciences, health policy)
  • A record of high quality peer-reviewed publications
  • Ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Interest and skills appropriate for writing grant proposals to multiple funding agencies
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

Demonstrated capacity for obtaining research funding, program development, and leadership in research and teaching is desirable, but not required.  

Besides her/his principal research activities, the faculty member will also be expected to spend a portion of time participating in the broader missions of the department and medical school as follows:

  • Teach and mentor medical students, graduate students, and/or research fellows
  • Establish and maintain collegial and productive contacts with other researchers and educators in the university and within existing research partnerships
  • Contribute to departmental administration as a member of committees

The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) is jointly sponsored by Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and focuses on research and teaching related to improving population health and health care delivery. The department is multi-disciplinary, with a research and teaching portfolio spanning a range of clinical, educational, and health service areas. The DPM is home to a number of rich data resources and has numerous strong local and national connections that amplify the opportunities for and impact of its research. It has a longstanding collaborative

relationship with Atrius Health, eastern Massachusetts’ largest fully computerized multispecialty group practice. It participates in a number of national collaborative research networks, including the Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN). It is currently leading a consortium of 28 institutions in the FDA-funded Sentinel project and is part of the Coordinating Center for the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet).

Clinicians may include part-time practice in their activities. Joint appointment in a second Harvard Medical School department or at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health may be appropriate.

Instructor or Assistant or Associate Professor of Population Medicine

The Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute seeks a faculty member for a full-time position as a junior or mid-level investigator working in the areas of comparative effectiveness and delivery science research.  Ideal candidates will have an MD degree, plus either an MPH or a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. However, well-qualified non-physicians with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.

 

The new faculty member will contribute to activities that aim to reshape the U.S. health care system to better meet population health needs. S/he will develop a portfolio of research, teaching, and policy development in the areas of comparative effectiveness and delivery science. The department has current activities in these domains related to public and private payers, health care delivery systems, and direct engagement of patients. Key research partners include Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a non-profit health plan covering more than 1 million members in four New England states; Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), a national network of 165 private community hospitals; and Atrius Health, an eastern Massachusetts multi-specialty group practice that cares for over 700,000 patients. Some of the Department’s current activities also bridge health system and community-based programs. The Department also has strong partnerships with state and national public health agencies, and leads multi-center research collaborations involving many of the nation’s largest health plans.

 

The incoming faculty member should have several years of experience in relevant research with a strong publication record; interest and skills appropriate for writing grant proposals to funding agencies; the ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams; and the capacity to establish new areas of expertise for the Department and/or support areas of ongoing research.  

 

The Department is uniquely positioned to lead population-based research with joint support from a medical school and a large non-profit health plan.  It has a multidisciplinary faculty with a research portfolio that spans a range of clinical, epidemiologic, health systems, and policy research in content areas that include child health, obesity, pharmaceuticals, infectious diseases, and cancer, among others.   Besides his/her principal research activity, the faculty member will also participate in mentoring students, research fellows, and/or junior faculty, and contribute to teaching and the broader mission of the Department.

The Harvard Medical School Department of Population Medicine at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute seeks a leader to develop a new program in Health Care Delivery and Effectiveness Research. This full time position is intended for a senior academic leader up to the rank of professor.

 

The faculty member will develop an expanded departmental portfolio of research, teaching, and policy development that includes both comparative effectiveness and delivery science research. The department has current activities in these domains that relate to purchasers, public and private payors, delivery systems, and direct engagement of patients and covered populations. Several activities bridge health system and community-based programs. The new faculty member will also have an active role in shaping the Department’s agenda in areas critical to reshaping the U.S. health care system to better meet the population’s needs. In addition to conducting independent and collaborative research based on external grant funding, the faculty member will also participate in the Department’s teaching activities, which involve fellows, primary care residents, graduate students, and medical students.

Many Parents Don’t Understand Their Children’s Asthma Medications

Led by DPM researchers Ann Wu, MD, MPHLingling Li, PhD, and Alison Galbraith, MD, MPH, the study included 740 providers and parents of children age 4-11 years with one or more diagnoses of asthma and one or more dispensing of asthma controller medications.  Those with severe asthma were excluded.  The parents and providers were surveyed by mail, telephone, web, or in person.
