Instructor or Assistant or Associate Professor of Population Medicine

The Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute seeks a faculty member for a full-time position as a junior or mid-level investigator working in the areas of comparative effectiveness and delivery science research.  Ideal candidates will have an MD degree, plus either an MPH or a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. However, well-qualified non-physicians with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.

The new faculty member will contribute to activities that aim to reshape the U.S. health care system to better meet population health needs. S/he will develop a portfolio of research, teaching, and policy development in the areas of comparative effectiveness and delivery science. The department has current activities in these domains related to public and private payers, health care delivery systems, and direct engagement of patients. Key research partners include Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a non-profit health plan covering more than 1 million members in four New England states; Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), a national network of 165 private community hospitals; and Atrius Health, an eastern Massachusetts multi-specialty group practice that cares for over 700,000 patients. Some of the Department’s current activities also bridge health system and community-based programs. The Department also has strong partnerships with state and national public health agencies, and leads multi-center research collaborations involving many of the nation’s largest health plans.

The incoming faculty member should have several years of experience in relevant research with a strong publication record; interest and skills appropriate for writing grant proposals to funding agencies; the ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams; and the capacity to establish new areas of expertise for the Department and/or support areas of ongoing research.

The Department is uniquely positioned to lead population-based research with joint support from a medical school and a large non-profit health plan.  It has a multidisciplinary faculty with a research portfolio that spans a range of clinical, epidemiologic, health systems, and policy research in content areas that include child health, obesity, pharmaceuticals, infectious diseases, and cancer, among others.   Besides his/her principal research activity, the faculty member will also participate in mentoring students, research fellows, and/or junior faculty, and contribute to teaching and the broader mission of the Department.

The Department is an appointing department of Harvard Medical School, at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. The Department offers a supportive and collaborative environment, and actively encourages applications from women and minorities.  Please see our website, www.populationmedicine.org, for more information.
