The Department of Population Medicine (formerly the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention) leads in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and skills essential to maximizing the health of defined populations within available resources.
Our core mission is to improve the health of individuals through research and teaching focused on patient populations and the health systems affecting their care.
Areas of Focus include:
• Promoting health through prevention
• Improving the quality and cost effectiveness of medical care
• Understanding and overcoming disparities in care
• Using information technology to improve and protect health
• Using evidence to build sound health policy
• Creating national and global partnerships for health research
• Training the next generation of clinical, research, and health system leaders

More About Our New Name - Our name, the Department of Population Medicine (DPM), which more accurately reflects our core mission, became effective July 1, 2009. We reside within the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and are an appointing department of Harvard Medical School.
